Google Drive Enhances Data Migration Service with Dropbox Support
Google has announced an exciting update to its Data Migration Service, which now includes support for Dropbox, making it easier for users to transfer their files and switch to Google Drive. How the Data Migration Service Works
The Data Migration Service is a sophisticated tool that allows users to transfer their files directly from Dropbox to Google Drive, preserving folder structures and associated permissions. This means that admins can migrate their company’s data without having to download and re-upload files, saving time and reducing the risk of data loss or corruption.
However, there is an important caveat: admins can only migrate up to 100 Dropbox users or team folders at a time. While this may seem like a limitation, Google has made it easy to keep track of progress, with comprehensive reporting on migration progress, including site and file counts (migrated/skipped).
Availability and Support
The Data Migration Service is available in the Admin console under Menu > Data > Data Import & export > Data Migration. Google has also confirmed that OneDrive business editions are supported for migration to Google Drive. Additionally, Starter/Standard/Plus versions of Google Workspace Business/Enterprise can use the new tool, as well as Essentials Starter, Enterprise Essentials/Essentials Plus and some education/nonprofit accounts.
It’s worth noting that Google isn’t the only company offering migration tools. Microsoft has its own set of instructions to migrate Google Drive customers to M365, and Dropbox also has its own Data Migration service. In July 2025, Google added Microsoft SharePoint migration to its Data Migration Service, which also has a limit of 100 SharePoint Online sites at a time.
