NASA’s Ingenuity Helicopter: A Groundbreaking Success and Future Developments
NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter made history in 2021 by becoming the first aircraft to achieve powered, controlled flight on another planet, Mars. The helicopter, which was part of the Perseverance rover mission, exceeded expectations with an impressive 72 flights across the Martian surface. According to Roland Brockers, a JPL researcher and drone pilot, the goal is to create future vehicles that can fly over challenging terrain without difficulty. “Ingenuity was designed to fly over well-textured terrain, estimating its motion by looking at visual features on the ground, but eventually it had to cross over blander areas where this became hard,” Brockers said. The test campaign has already led to significant developments, including the discovery of how different camera filters can help the drone track the ground below and how new algorithms can guide it to safely land in cluttered terrain.
NASA has a long history of testing equipment in Death Valley, dating back to the 1970s when it prepared for the first Mars landings with the Viking spacecraft. More recently, the agency tested the Perseverance rover’s precision landing system in the area. The rover’s successful landing on Mars was captured in a stunning video that showed its final moments before touchdown.
