One game surprised me the most in the Xbox Developer Direct — and it’s a wacky brawler that’s releasing this year

Introducing Kiln: A Wacky Pottery-Themed Brawler from Double Fine

Kiln, a unique multiplayer brawler, was one of the biggest surprises of the recent Xbox Developer Direct showcase. Developed by Double Fine, the studio behind iconic titles like Psychonauts and Keeper, Kiln allows players to sculpt their own sentient pots and engage in online battles. The game’s announcement trailer showcases a range of walking pottery being smashed in a gloriously satisfying manner.

The size and shape of the player’s design determine its combat abilities, adding an interesting layer of strategy to the game. Double Fine die-hards might recognize Kiln as one of the titles featured in the studio’s Amnesia Fortnight 2017, an annual game jam that has its teams creating novel ideas for two weeks that are sometimes shown off to the public.

Gameplay and Features

According to the original pitch from 2017, “Kiln is a multiplayer, team-based brawler by Derek Brand with a focus on creating unique player sculpted characters featuring crazy physics-based animation and destruction.” The game allows for extremely diverse character shapes and sizes, each exhibiting unique attributes and controls that leverage the possibilities in procedural animation.

Release and Availability

Kiln is set to release later this year for Xbox Series X and Series S, PlayStation 5, and PC. Interested players can sign up for a beta testing program for the chance to try the game early via the official website. With its unique blend of creativity and destruction, Kiln is definitely a game to keep an eye on in the coming months.
