Apple’s Upcoming iOS 26.3 Update to Introduce Enhanced Location Privacy Feature
Apple is set to release a new privacy feature with its upcoming iOS 26.3 update, allowing iPhone and iPad users to conceal their precise location from network carriers. This feature, spotted in the latest iOS 26.3 beta build, aims to limit the location data that carriers can access, providing users with greater control over how their whereabouts are shared. According to Apple, this move is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance user privacy and security.
The new “limit precise location” setting, as detailed on a support page, will reduce the precision of location data available to cellular networks. Currently, carriers can pinpoint a user’s location down to a street address based on which cell towers their phone connects to. With this setting enabled, carriers will only be able to identify the general neighborhood where the device is located, rather than the exact street address. How the Feature Works and Its Limitations
Apple has clarified that the new setting will not impact signal quality or the overall user experience. It also does not limit the location data shared with emergency responders during emergency calls, ensuring that critical services can still access precise location information when needed. Furthermore, the setting does not affect the location information shared with apps, which will continue to function as they do now. However, it’s worth noting that this feature will not be available on all iPhone and iPad models, only working on devices that use Apple’s in-house C1 or C1X modems, such as the iPhone Air, iPhone 16e, and the cellular version of the M5 iPad Pro.
In terms of carrier support, the feature will initially be limited to select network providers. In the US, Boost Mobile will be the only carrier to support the option at launch. Internationally, Apple has announced that Telekom in Germany, EE and BT in the UK, and AIS and True in Thailand will also support the feature. To enable the setting, users will need to navigate to the Cellular menu in the Settings app, select Cellular Data Options, and turn on Limit Precise Location. Users may be prompted to restart their device for the change to take effect.
