My Unexpected Love Affair with the PlayStation Portal
If you had told me two years ago that the PlayStation Portal would become one of my favorite gaming accessories, I wouldn’t have believed you. When the Portal launched in late 2023, I was skeptical about its value, questioning who it was for, given its requirement to be tethered to a PlayStation 5 at all times. However, after a series of vital updates, my opinion has changed dramatically.
The Portal can now stream games from your library or the PlayStation Plus catalog without needing your PS5 to be switched on, transforming it from a simple remote play device into a capable cloud streaming machine. This evolution, combined with general improvements to streaming, has made the Portal an indispensable part of my gaming setup.
From Skepticism to Enthusiasm
Initially, I saw the Portal as a “nice to have” feature, useful for playing my PS5 in the lounge, but not a necessity. The quality of the connection is generally strong, although the PS5 dashboard appears a bit low-res and out of focus. However, with the addition of cloud streaming via PS Plus Premium, my perspective has shifted. This feature adds significant value to the subscription service and allows me to use the Portal without needing my PS5 to be on.

Cloud Streaming: A Game-Changer
With cloud streaming, I can play titles from the PS Plus game catalog or select games I own without needing my PS5 to be on. Criticisms and Limitations
While I’ve grown to love the Portal, it’s not without its flaws. The device feels a bit slapped together, and its build quality could be improved. Battery life is also a concern, with around 5 hours of gameplay before needing to recharge. However, these limitations don’t detract from the Portal’s overall value, especially considering its improved cloud streaming capabilities.
