This is the tech that makes Volvo’s latest EV a major step forward

Introduction to the 2027 Volvo EX60

Volvo has been at the forefront of electric vehicle (EV) innovation, experimenting with various approaches to create a comprehensive lineup of eco-friendly cars. The latest addition to their portfolio is the 2027 Volvo EX60, a five-seat SUV that boasts impressive engineering improvements, making it a significant step forward for the Swedish automaker. The EX60 is built on a new architecture that offers enhanced range and charging performance, backed by cutting-edge software with artificial intelligence (AI) integration.

Key Features and Specifications

The 2027 Volvo EX60 will be available in three variants: single-motor rear-wheel drive P6, dual-motor all-wheel drive P10, and the bigger-battery dual-motor P12. The P12 model features a 117-kilowatt-hour (112-kWh usable) battery pack, providing an estimated 400 miles of EPA-estimated range with the smallest-available 20-inch wheels. The P10 and P6 models have estimated ranges of up to 320 miles and 310 miles, respectively. The EX60’s SPA3 architecture also incorporates 800-volt charging, allowing dual-motor models to charge at up to 370 kilowatts.

Design and Engineering

The EX60’s design is a stylish yet familiar take on the traditional SUV, with a more rugged appearance in the Cross Country model. The vehicle’s size is fairly conventional, measuring 189 inches long, 74.7 inches wide, and 64.5 inches tall. The EX60 adopts cell-to-body construction, where the battery cells are mounted directly to the vehicle’s structure, reducing weight and simplifying manufacturing. The chassis will also be built from several large “mega castings,” streamlining the manufacturing process and cutting costs.

Computing Power and Infotainment

The EX60 features Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Cockpit Platform system-on-a-chip, providing more processing power than any previous Volvo production car. Nvidia’s Drive platform handles driver-assist features, and the two are tied together with in-house developed electronics into what Volvo calls the HuginCore architecture. This setup enables a natural-language interface, allowing users to query the car for information like hotel recommendations and cargo space.

Conclusion and Competition

The 2027 Volvo EX60 is a significant step forward for the brand, offering impressive range, charging performance, and computing power. However, it will face strong competition from European rivals like the BMW iX3 and the electric version of the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class. As Volvo needs a mainstream hit, the EX60’s success is crucial.
